NOTE: as these coding examples are all quite old, they do not reflect my actual coding skills at the moment. these are all very messy, and my coding tends to be very organized — also, i barely ever use inline css anymore and most of my css coding skills land within the realm of external stylesheets. however, i'm still using this as a (css-only) portfolio until i get an actual webpage that i can test multiple coding languages on. :)

Description

Eggpaw is a smaller than average, scrawny light beige she-cat. She has a spot of dark beige on her right eye, and her left ear is folded while the other is comically large. She has strange snake-like deep golden brown eyes, an extremely strange trait for cats. Her fur is thin and soft, and sticks up like a puffball when she's threatened. She has a very thin, scrawny body with dark beige running down it as a back stripe that starts on her head. Her tail is stubby and half the length it should be. She has snake-like fangs that she uses to threaten people, even though she's very, very weak and doesn't know how to fight. Her companion is a male anaconda phase western hognose snake named Snakes who follows her around.

Personality

Eggpaw is used to represent me. She is mostly kind and loves to argue. She is also very active, commenting and submitting articles very often.

In And Then There Were Five, the currently work-in-progress BlogFic, she's more sinister and manipulative and is the villain of the story. Of course, though, this is just a book.

Interview with Emby about the upcoming election!edit | edit source This is our interview about the elections with Emby the current leader of the apprentice army!

Q: What motivated you to run for the army leader the first time?

A: I really really love the idea of an Apprentice Army. The army first started in December of 2020. Its been and warm and welcoming place ever since. I'm planning on starting a NTA and more fun activities on there soon!! All apprentices are welcome into the army so you don't have to ask! I'm getting off track here aren't I? Well I really loved the idea of leading a group of amazing friends. I love putting on work to make it active and fun. I love the Apprentice Army with a burning passion and I wanted to make it fun and enjoyable. That is really why I ran the first time but after staying up for hours and hours every night coming up with ideas for it, it really feels like a family for me.

Q: Why should we vote for you?

A: As I said before I spent hours and hours every night working on ideas. I'm out of school now and I want to make the army an AMAZING place. I didn't get to make the Apprentice Army actvice due to school but now that I'm out out of school I want to do so much with it but if I don't get elected I won't have the time. Though I know anyone who is elected is gonna be awesome!!

Q: What’s your opinion on Waffleclan?

A: I don't knwo much about WaffleClan but I bet its an amazing place! I didn't create the Apprentice Army so I guess if you think that I wouldn't like it because its close to the army, you were more than wrong! I think its an awesome place C: I might sign up if I ever get the chance!

Q: How much bigger do you think that the apprentice army can be?

A: Ha! The Apprentice Army is pretty massive but everyone and anyone can join so it can get pretty big!! All Apprentices are part of it, its really a matter if you want to do anything in it!!

Q: Do you think that you have a chance of winning?

A: Well I can't really tell but I hope so! Honestly all cats in the army are AWESOME so it's always hard. I hope that all cats voting can trust that I will try my hardest and work as much as I can! I love all the cats on BlogClan and I know no matter what, the army will be in good hands.

Q: If you won, would you carry on with things the way it is or change things?

A: Oh gosh, there are a LOT of things I would change. I will post the link on the tavern and the allengiances page every week unless its not a new page, I will create games to play on the page, I will make a wiki page for it explaining some stuff about it and interviewing some member, talking about roles, and doing contests! Of course, I would keep some things the same! The Apprentice Army its still an *army* and we are still planning on attacking the mods and taking over the blog just as apprentices do! C: We still host the yearly Apprentice Army Party which was a major hit this year! Our roles should stay the same, with new roles and edited roles.

Scrolling Boxes

how to code scrolling boxes

Coding scrolling boxes is really simple! So, here's your average box:

Now, to add the scrolling bit! To add a scroll, I do "overflow:auto", but you can also do "overflow:scroll". Overflow is your friend! I also added some extra text so you can see the scroll later.

But if you use this, you can see it doesn't scroll! That's because the box doesn't have a set height, so it keeps growinig to allow more text to fit. Add "height:" and then a number of pixels to show how high it should be. I usually use "height:700px". Here, I also added "width:", which, in normal cases, I just set to "width:675px".

As you can see, now the box scrolls! You can do this with any box, even a box with boxes in it, so have fun I guess

Graphic Design

"Why is this here?" You might ask. "This is a page for coding!" Well, graphic design is a big part of coding, and it's a thing I see a lot of people get wrong. So, I'll explain graphic design!

Color

One of the biggest parts of graphic design! :D

Complimentary colors

In this section I'll reference the color wheel.

On this watermarked wheel you can see primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and secondary colors (orange, purple, green, etc.), as well as mixes between primaries and secondaries (tertiaries? idk). Complimentary colors are colors opposite from each other on the color wheel. So, red and green are complimentary, and purple and yellow are complimentary. Complimentary colors are used to make certain things pop in a design. However, due to being literal opposites, it's a general rule to never overuse complimentary colors. You shouldn't use these colors in gradients or anything of the sort. I'm being strict about it, I know, but this is important! If you don't, you might end up with an ugly brown smudge or a generally unappealing or eye-straining design.

This is an example of bad use of complimentary colors:

This is an example of good use of complimentary colors:

Good! Good! Good!

As you can see, the bad example is jarring and hard to read while the text in the good example pops. Of course, neither of these are entirely good designs; both are way too vibrant. But we'll get to that!

Analogous Colors

Analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel. An example is red, red-orange, and orange. These can be used in gradients! However, they may be too similar to use for text.

Bad example:

Bad! Bad! Bad!

Good example:

Good! Good! Good!

See how you can barely read the bad example? Meanwhile, the good example has a nice, subtle gradient.

Shades and Tints

Shade/Brightness: The amount of black in a color. Higher brightness is less black.

Tint/Saturation: The amount of white in a color. Higher saturation is less white.

NOTE: Less black is not the same as more white, and vice versa.

Shades and tints are powerful tools when using color. They can help make a design less jarring. Using shades and tints can create monotone color palettes, which are composed from shade and tints of only one color. Here's an example:

While it's not jarring, it could use some improvement!

Shades and tints can also be used to soften a design. Say for example a box was all bright pink with blue text. That would be quite eye-straining since all elements compete for attention. But if you increase the amount of white in the pink while deepening the blue, the design will become readable!

Shape

Shape is an underestimated part of graphic design. The basic shapes are circles, squares, and triangles (SQUID GAME!). To find out the perfect shapes to use, here is a quick question!

What theme are you aiming for most?

A: Playful and bubbly

B: Sleek and modern

C: Vintage and delicate

D: Soft and cutesy

If you answered A, you should go for round shapes like circles! Try rounding the corners of rectangles and triangles for a more playful look!

If you answered B, you should go for sharp shapes with no rounded corners! Try using mostly rectangles and squares!

If you answered C, try a combination of rectangles and triangles with no rounded corners!

If you answered D, go for slightly rounded rectangles and limited usage of circles!

Here's a tip: if you're deciding between two shapes (e.g. circles and rectangles), look at each and name them the first name that comes to mind. I named the circle "Bobby" and the rectangle "Crustacean" (don't ask). Choose the shape with the name that best fits the rest of your design!

Line

This is the same principal as full shapes, but there's some extra things to keep in mind:

Horizontal lines symbolize peace and sturdiness.
Vertical lines are tall and grand.
Diagonal lines indicate movement and playfulness.
Shallow curves are relaxing.
Deep curves are more violent or can show size.
A bunch of diagonal lines with different directions give a sense of chaos and energy.

Now that you know this, what will you do with it? Well, use it! Use horizontal partitions in a professional website to show how sturdy your business is. Use diagonal stripes in a personal blog to show friendliness. Use circles in that same blog, and rectangles in your serious website. There are a ton of things you can use shape & line for, so use it!

Busy Designs: Why You Should Simplify

Take a look at these sketches:

Now, which one is better? The soft, minimalistic one on the left? Or the bright, complex one on the right? In the end, it boils down to opinion, but most will answer the one on the left. So, let's examine both of these designs to find out what makes the right one so jarring.

First, the color. I used blue on both of them to make them a bit more similar, but there's a clear difference. One is softer, and the other is brighter. And, let's look at how many colors in each:

Left: Three colors.

Right: Six colors, not including the ones in between the gradients! And that's for a design that only has blue!

On the right, the bright blue of the border doesn't much the dark blue spots or the gradient background and boxes. Meanwhile, on the left, the colors nicely compliment each other because one is light, one is dark, and one is in the middle. A perfect balance!

Now, the lines. The left has a nice, solid line, while the right one has an unnecessary dashed border. Generally, the best border to use is solid, but done well, dashed/dotted/grooved borders can look nice. In this scenario, however, more business doesn't make it better. With the dots and gradients already going on, it's a good idea to just leave the border alone.

And finally, the pattern. The left is what some would call "boring", but it's a great example of minimalism. I'm not saying the sloppy design I drew is better than anyone else could do with a busy design. I'm saying that, sometimes, less is more. That's because, if you look at the right side, you see an example of a busy design done badly. The background has a gradient and spots. The gradient is quite jarring, and the spots are very loud. In a busy design like this, the best thing to do is choose either one: the spots or the gradient. The spots would still need to be mellowed down a bit, and you could keep both but tone them down, but the point is, there shouldn't be too much business in the design. And then, the boxes. My rule: if you're going to put text in a box, the box should be clean. No gradients, no patterns. Otherwise, the text may be hard to read.

So, what's the moral of the story?

Don't use too much colors
- Aim for 3-4
Try to maintain the right balance of business
Sometimes, less is more
- But busy designs can be done well, too!
