Prologue[]

“Sleep.” Nutrose’s voice was gentle, coaxing, as she pushed Moonkit into their “nest”, really a roughly arranged pile of bracken and marigold.

Moonkit’s eyes rounded. “I’ll sleep if you tell us a story!”

“I want to hear a story, too.” Sunkit mumbled softly, eyes half-closed.

“Fine.” Nutrose sighed and closed her eyes. She was running out of stories to tell to her daughters, and they always asked for a new one. There was one story, though, which she had not yet told them.

It won’t be told until leaf-fall.

So what?

Just start already!

And so she began, starting slow.

Once upon a time, there were three siblings who were as thick as the the hairs on a badger’s pelt.

One was called Heatherpounce, and she was strong and swift and respected and feared and loved and treasured, with the strength of fire and the emotion of ice, the speed of the wind and the fierce devotion to her kin, the epitome of a warrior.

Another was called Plumewillow, a silent, wary, gifted predator with kind spirit and sharp claws and life and nature and fragility and love and hatred and trust and grace and gratitude blooming inside of her, growing into a delicate, beautiful, deadly flower.

The last was called Rushflight, one with mind and direction and insight, weaving the terrain with knowledge of the world deeper than the lake, one with the vision of everything in him.

One day, Plumewillow was standing guard when she spotted three ShadowClan cats, Toadfeather, Snailcrawl and Newtdapple, creep over the open moors. They had come to ambush her Clan!

Whistling a warning to her Clanmates, she noted that there was a line of warriors behind the three patrol leaders. As the first  battle cry broke the air, she kept an eye on her sister, who, in the midst of battle, could be too reckless, and found her taking on the three patrol leaders at once, whirling and clawing. As she saw more reinforcements for ShadowClan marching forward, panic slowly began to seep through the corners of her mind. The fight was turning into a slaughter.

Two days later, ShadowClan’s leader, Sleetstar, called an emergency Gathering, consisting of only the leader, deputy, seer and one cat of each other role, not including elders and queens, for each Clan. Since Plumewillow had been promoted to senior hunter not long ago, she was invited to the meeting, with her littermates.

Sleetstar carried news that Heatherpounce had killed a few warriors of the patrol and ripped the ear of one, resulting in permanent loss of hearing in the torn ear. The shocked WindClan authorities exiled Heatherpounce, however her brother and sister decided to go with her.

Several days later, when Heatherpounce was alone, she was attacked by a ShadowClan exile and succumbed to her wounds hours later, alone and bitter.

When she woke, she was in the Place of No Stars, trapped, forever separated from the family she fought so hard to protect.

Nutrose glanced down at Moonkit and Sunkit and saw that they were both fast asleep. She smiled and softly murmured, “Sweet dreams, my precious kits.”
