Cheetahkit was bored.

Her morning had been spent (as usual) hissing at pretty much every other cat in WindClan because they were being rude to Owlkit; and it was barely sunhigh. She scowled.

‘I mean, seriously, just because he can't hear does NOT make him any less nice or worthy of cats' attention!’ she thought, lashing her tail as she watched her littermate quietly wash his whiskers. ‘Why can't ANY cat understand that?!’

Cheetahkit and her brother had been found near the Twolegplace over four moons ago, when they were both less than a moon old. They would have died if it hadn't been for the WindClan leader, Goldenstar, who happened to be leading a patrol when Cheetahkit and Owlkit got attacked by a fox. They'd survived, but Owlkit had hit his head, and had been deaf ever since. Now the amount of teasing Cheetahkit went through because of her brother's hearing problems almost made her wish that Goldenstar hadn't come at all.

She wished with all her heart that she could just go hunt and get away from camp instead of having to stare at the other kits happily playing moss ball without her.

She sighed. ‘I wish I could join them.’

‘But they’d probably make me go away,’ she reminded herself. ‘After all, APPARENTLY, I'm not good enough to play with them, just because my mother was a loner, and my brother is deaf.’

‘Whatever. I don’t care. I can play by myself instead.’ Cheetahkit told herself, rolling a small stone glumly with her paw. She tried and failed to push down the aching feeling of loneliness that seemed to have settled down inside her.

She watched the kits on the other side of the camp, while she and Owlkit sat alone, far from the game.

She had never realised how scattered the sky was before. The clouds were spread across the sky, covering it, and blocking out the sun. Monalkit could feel the tension from an incoming storm approaching. She fluffed her fur up and turned around to see her mother standing in the river, looking into the distance.

Monalkit shook out her fur, having gone for a dip in the shallow water earlier, and padded towards her mother - (insert mothers name here) - flicking her in the face with a bit of water.

“What’s wrong?” Monalkit asked, giggling as her mother gave her a very stern look, but she could see the twinkle behind her eyes. Her mother let out a laugh and shook her head slowly, wrapping her tail around Monalkit’s back, pulling her in for a hug.

“Nothing,” Monalkit’s mother mewed; only someone close to her could have heard the strain in her voice and notice how quietly she said it. The little brown kit looked up at her mother, not convinced at all that absolutely nothing was wrong in her mum’s life right now.

“I don’t believe you,” Monalkit meowed stoutly, stomping her foot, and flicking her mother in the face with another spray of water. “No one’s life is perfect, so don’t tell me that absolutely nothing is wrong right now.”

“Oh, Monalkit, you are growing up too fast. Too many deep thoughts in that little brain of yours!” Her mother smiled playfully, tapping Monalkit on the head with her tail. The small kit looked defiantly up at her mother, sticking her bottom lip out with her whiskers twitching, and her tail straight out behind her. Monalkit then giggled and let go of the tension in her body, resting her head against her mother’s hind leg.

This was it. This was all she needed. Just her mother by her side, no one else. Just her and her mother.

The clouds misted their way over the sky, splotching the brilliant blue ocean above with little white balls of fluff. Sagekit stared at them from her place on the rock, her eyes wide and innocent.

‘They’re so FLUFFY,’ she mewed happily to the sandy coloured tom-kit beside her. “I wanna TOUCH one!”

Larkkit squeaked a laugh, his pure white ears twitching. “Pfft! You can’t touch a cloud, Sagekit!”

Sagekit huffed. “Not true. I totally could!”

Larkkit rolled his eyes. “No, you can’t. For starters, you can’t reach them.”

She straightened and gave him a playful look. “I SO COULD. If I climbed to the top of Eagle Pine, I bet I could reach a cloud.”

Larkkit flicked his tail over her snout with a wicked grin. Sagekit glared at him, and he transferred his gaze back to the clouds, blinking with wide, innocent eyes. “You could not. You would fall at the third branch up! You are an awful climber.”

“I AM NOT,” Sagekit yelped. “I am a GREAT climber!”

“Harrowflight says otherwise. So does that cut.” Larkkit tapped Sagekit’s foreleg with his tail, right over her healing wound. Sagekit scowled at him.

Harrowflight was the grumpy ShadowClan medicine cat who had given Sagekit strict orders about climbing anything since her accident in the forest when she had snuck out, climbed a tree to catch a crow and slipped at the first branch, cutting her foreleg on the way down and spraining her back paw. Sagekit refused to be restrained for long though. She was already getting restless, itching to sneak out of camp again.

“I would easily climb that tree,” she said to Larkkit. “And then you would have to catch me a bajillion rabbits to make up for all your doubt.”

Larkkit’s eyes danced with mirth. “Okay,” he said merrily. “Whateeeeeever you say.” He gave her a look that meant, ‘You can't climb, and you know it, but you're too STUBBORN to admit it.’

“You are ridiculous,” said Sagekit. “It would TOTALLY HAPPEN.”

Instead of responding, Larkkit’s gaze flicked to the other kits playing moss ball in the camp. Lightkit and Leapkit - his littermates - were in the game, as well as Sagekit’s sister, Briarkit and two other cats named Seedkit and Flowerkit. “That looks like fun,” Sagekit commented. “Let’s go, let’s go!”

With relentless energy, she leapt off the boulder to join her friends, with Larkkit following close behind, laughing. A few minutes later the ball was flying over the clearing, slamming into multiple warriors. Half the cats in the clan turned their scowls towards the giggling young cats, especially Stormshade, a snarky dark-grey shecat who was constantly irritated, in Sagekit's opinon. Halfstar surveyed Sagekit and her friends with a mix of amusement and disapproval, her ears twitching. Sagekit gave her a merry wave with her tail.

“Go, Briarkit!” she yowled, tossing the ball to her sister. She watched as the dappled kit leapt up to catch it with her jaws and then threw it to Flowerkit, who kicked it to the other side of the clearing.

Sagekit sighed happily. She loved ShadowClan. She loved the confidence it gave her, the way the warriors held themselves, the dark, cosy forests encasing the camp. It was all just perfect. They had a great leader, a loyal deputy and plenty of strong, capable warriors ready to protect them.

ShadowClan was a good home to her. And in return, Sagekit was determined to be the best, most loyal warrior she could be, for the rest of her life.

She wouldn’t leave. She would never give up on her clan, no matter how hard things got. Never, ever, ever.

Loyalty to her clan was the most important skill a warrior could have. Because if a cat wasn’t loyal, then all their hard work meant nothing.

She darted forward and hooked the ball on her claws, tossing it over a rock to Lightkit and knocking Leapkit over when he tried to snatch it off her.

“Haha! Don’t you dare!!” she yowled, pouncing on him. “Cower in fear! I am Sagekit! GREATEST WARRIOR OF ALL TIME.”

The other kits dropped the moss ball and bounded onto her and Leapkit, sending paws and legs flying up in the air as they all tumbled together, tails and ears high as they pretended to hiss.

Sagekit laughed and sat back contentedly on her hunches. This was perfect. Everything was perfect.

No matter what, her Clan had her back. And she would be loyal and protective and as wonderful as a warrior could ever be in return.
